U - Turn...

IT Industry is/was in a great boom in India. Parents wanted their daughter to get married to an IT engineer or shld I say parents wanted an IT engineer as their son-in-law. In the market of arrange marriage that prevails in India, these guys always had a leading edge. They were like ‘Perfect marriage material’ for girls. With Bush presidency falling and with recession and Obama’s No-outsourcing strategy, party time is now over for these most wanted bachelors. Something which goes too high has to fall – is the law of nature.

In India – guys with marriageable age and with no girlfriend / fiancĂ©e time is really 。。。
Let’s take up one scenario to describe it – A guy is visiting girls place with marriage proposal. A typical arrange marriage scenario.

Girl’s father: So son, you said you work for an IT company?
Guy: Yes sir, I am a software engineer working in a well-known IT company engaged with outsourcing projects. [Poor guy was confused if the question was asked proudly or with sympathy]

Girl’s father was too quick to solve his confusion.

Girl’s father: So son, what do you think, how long your company gonna survive and how secured is your job?

Poor guy, even before seeing the beautiful girl he longing to marry, his dream was shattered.

It’s no at all his mistake, with these unfavorable market conditions companies are giving out – Pink slips – even to the male employees, without giving it a thought how a guy be looking with it.

These days matrimony ad is somewhat like this – Wanted a guy for my Non-IT background girl [In bold letters ofcourse] who holds a SAFE job and can provide my daughter with basic necessities like 3 star hotel food once in a week, small 3BHK flat, few 3-4 dozen branded clothes and MONEY.

Few tips for an IT professional before visiting girl’s residence with marriage proposal.

1. Supplementary course: Till date we have been seeing many mechanical, electrical engineers or commerce / Arts background doing supplementary computer courses. Time has now changed. Now an IT engineer shld have a supplementary qualification like IT / Software engineer + LLM / Interior designing / CS / CA
2. Use the best an expensive perfume and branded clothes: Well! This will help girl’s dad to smell that you still can afford these things. And who knows like the perfume ad shown on TV girl will fall in your arms and kiss you. [Precautions to be taken – don’t sit too close to girl’s father or mother].
3. Talk on any topic other than Obama presidency and recession: Don’t get caught yourself in this discussion if you are working for an IT Company.

I guess that people are not looking at the bigger picture. The recession is not about IT, its about Finance and Banking industry. IT and IT enabled services is only one sector dependent on the failure of the Banking and Finance Industry.

Did you know that bigger impact of the recession is infact been felt in the Housing industry so people are finding tougher for Banks to lend them money to buy houses and sellers not finding customers to buy their houses; the credit card industry where you do not have takers to get in new credit cards and large scale defualters in that domain; and the automobile and manufacturing industry as Banks are not lending money to buyers to buy cars and large scale machinary; and also its felt accross the board for retiil stores who are not finding enough customers to generate sufficient revenues to pay for their inventories.

Hence Sharavani, its not IT that has the recession, its accross the board and everybody is involved in it.

Hello Aditya,

Thanks for ur comments. Your inputs are worth considering.

Though, I have written this blog in a lighter mode. I myself have done majors in economics and so am very well aware of the market condition and the demand and supply circle affecting every sector.

Anyways, Thanks!
